Percentage Basics

Easy

A percentage expresses a number as a fraction of 100.

Why It Matters

Percentages appear in data interpretation, profit/loss, and salary comparisons — nearly every placement aptitude test includes them.

How It Works

A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. To convert a fraction to a percentage, multiply by 100. To convert a percentage to a decimal, divide by 100. Key formulas: Percentage = (Part / Whole) × 100. Percentage change = ((New − Old) / Old) × 100. When a value increases by x% and then decreases by x%, the net result is always a decrease of (x²/100)%.

Example

If a shirt's price increases from ₹400 to ₹500, the percentage increase = ((500 − 400) / 400) × 100 = 25%.

Common Mistakes

Students often calculate percentage change using the new value as the base instead of the old value. Another common error is assuming successive percentage changes cancel out (e.g., +20% then −20% ≠ 0%).
